On 1 September 2011, the International Conference “John Henry Newman and the University” took place at the Auditorium of Austral University, devoted to the vision of university of the eminent tutor from Oxford and funding rector of the University College Dublin
The first lecture was held by Msgr. Fernando Cavaller, PhD, President of the Newman Friends Association in Argentina, who spoke about “Cor ad Cor Loquitur: the personal influence of university professors as a means of spreading the truth”.

Later, Pádraic Conway, PhD, Director of the International Centre for Newman Studies, University College of Dublin, referred to: “The idea of a University. Newman’s vision as Founding Rector of University College Dublin”. Newman, Conway explained, imagined a University open to the search of universal knowledge and to the truth. However, his vision on the universality of knowledge is not the typical one of the Enlightenment, he explained. Newman, he claimed, resorts to an earlier tradition in which knowledge of the universe shows its Creator. “We, as university people, participate in a science of learning with ultimate goals and fruits that exceed us”, he suggested.
